Apple has introduced its highly anticipated augmented reality headset, called Vision Pro, which the company claims to be the most advanced personal electronic device ever created. During the unveiling at Apple's headquarters in California, CEO Tim Cook emphasized the groundbreaking potential of blending virtual reality and augmented reality.
The Vision Pro headset resembles a pair of ski goggles and features a high-resolution glass screen with 23 million pixels, covering the upper face. Users can control the device through eye movements, hand gestures, and voice commands. Apple's aim with Vision Pro is to enable "spatial computing," allowing users to interact with digital content as if it were part of their physical environment.
To enhance the immersive experience, the headset includes built-in speakers and attaches using an adjustable headband. A wire connects the device to a battery pack, conveniently located in the user's pocket. Apple claims that the vents integrated into the headset keep it cool and virtually silent during operation.
However, innovation comes at a price, as the Vision Pro headset will be available for $3,499 in the United States, significantly higher than other leading VR headsets on the market. The Meta Quest 2, Facebook's popular VR headset, retails for just £299.99 in comparison.
Apple plans to launch Vision Pro in the United States from early next year, with availability in other countries to follow later in the year. The unveiling marks Apple's entrance into the augmented reality headset market, making it the company's first major product release since the Apple Watch in 2015.
Tim Cook expressed his belief in the transformative power of augmented reality, stating that blending digital content with the real world opens up unprecedented experiences. He described Vision Pro as a new type of computer that seamlessly combines the physical and digital worlds, freeing users from the limitations of traditional displays. Cook also emphasized the platform's potential for users and developers, presenting an exciting new era in spatial computing.
